They eat fish mainly, but a-Iso feed on the insects, frogs and crayfish. Howevers the kingfisher species that live in the woodlands also eat reptiles, birds and even small-size mammals, occasionally. There are three different types of kingfishers around the world. They are: i) river kingfishers ii) the tree kingfishers and iii) water kingfishers. All the species have large head; long, sharp and pointed bills; short legs, and stubby tails. The smallest species of kingfisher bird is known as the "African Dwarf" Kingfisher. On an average, it weighs around 10.4g in weight. It is just 10cm (4 inches) long. The largest of all kingfisher species is known as the "Giant Kingfisher", which woeighs (on an average) 355 g and grows up to 45 cm i.e. 18 inches. familiar Australian kingfisher bird is
known as the "Laughing Kookaburra", which is considered as the heaviest known kingfisher species. Large adult Australian kingfishers exceed 450g in weight, which is quite a common feature.
They are identified with their vibrant coloured feathers ranging between the colours from black to red, to green.
Some species of kingfisher birds have tufts of feathers on their heads which stick upwards.And, many species of kingfisher birds have smooth and flat feathers covering their bodies.Kingfishers make their nests in the tree hollows and holes, that they dug into the ground. The criteria of the tree for their nest is that it should be situated on river banks or at the sides of lakes. loss. These threatened species inhabit woodland and forests and fall prey to deforestation and climate change.
