Shravanabelagola - Eighth wonder of the world

Eighth wonder of the world

Widely considered as the Eighth Wonder of the World, the idol of Lord Bahubali popularly known as Gommateshwara, is the world's tallest monolithic idol. The only one of its kind in the whole world, this colossal statue is truly
afeat of immaculate craftsmanship with many amazing facts attached to it.

The majestic idol of Lord Bahubali is carved out of a single huge granite rock and is a standing evidence of the triumph of man over physical desires and single minded penance.
This huge idol of Lord Bahubali, which was built in 981 A.D. and which is 58.7 feet in height is still standing without any support and this is quite unbelievable and not only we human beings, even nature also adores this
unparallel creation on earth and pays its homage in a very silent manner, which can be witnessed from the fact, that till date, the idol has remained untouched by any of the natural calamities.
The uniqueness of this idol also lies in the fact that, despite being so tall, it still does not reflect
any shadow and can be seen from miles away i.e., almost from mid-way from Bangalore, which
is 155 kms away from Shravanabelagola. Although it is believed that the height of this idol is 58•7 feet, but it is a fact that, till date nobody has been able to give the accurate measurement of this idol. Whoever has measured it, all of them are of different opinions. Here, what generates curiosity is. the question that, if in today's well-equipped technological world, we are unable to measure the height of the idol than just imagine about the sculptor, how he has managed to design it. Hats off to the great sculptor Aristenemi who has created such a unique idol and that too on a hill top with so much perfection. The magnetic charm of •this 1125 years old idol of Lord Bahubali attracts a large number of devotees and tourists to visit this sacred place throughout the year. Moreover, the fascinating surroundings endow this place a unique
serenity. The site. of the. Bindhyagiri hill during the Mahamastakabhisheka or the Head Anointing Ceremony — one of the biggest celebrations of India and Jainis in particular, which is held after every 12 years is worth watching.
The first Mahamastakabhishekawas performed in the year 981 and the most recent one which took place was in February 2006.The eternal peace which can be witnessed here during the festival amidst the colourful surroundings in the feet of Lord Bahubali is something, which cannot be measured but is to be treasured for life time.
